Amla Compositions ....

Introduction: There are nearly more than 200 formulations of Amla. These formulations are used in a wide range of disorder like conjunctivitis, vision disorders, hyperacidity, rheumatic disorders, abdominal disorders, jaundice, hiccough, breathing disorders, fever, cough, ear disorders, good for hair growth and texture, skin disorders, intoxication due to alcohol and gynaecological disorders.

Some Amla compositions are mentioned below:
  • Amalakyadi churna: A pulvis or powder (churna) form of Amla (Amalaki) and several other (adi) herbal drugs.

    Indication: Fever. It is also meant for smooth functioning of gastro-intestinal tract, as it acts as a purgative, apetiser and digestive.

  • Aamalaki Rasayanam: It has been vividly described in Charak Samhita, the ancient text book of Ayurvedic medicine. Amla (Amalaki) in fresh single form can be taken in regular basis for rejuvenating (Rasayana) the body.

  • Asokarista: A fermented preparation (Arista), named according to the first herb in it, the Asoka (Saraca asoka). The composition includes Amla, Harda, Bahada, Kernel of Mango, Vasa, Sandal wood powder, Cumin (black), Dry ginger, Berberis, and ghee.

    Indication: Leucorrhoea, purpura, piles, dyspepsia, anorexia, and anomalies of Urinary secretion.

  • Avipatikara Churnam: A powder form (churna) of a medicinal formulation described in Ayurveda that works as an antidote( Avipattikara). The composition includes Amla, Harda, Bahada, Dry ginger, Pepper and Long pepper along with rock salt, elaichi, clove etc.

    Indication: Hyper-acidity, intestinal obstruction, indigestion, diabetes and piles.

  • Chyavananaprasa Leham: A thick sauce like (leham) form of herbal formulation, named after the saint Chyavana. It is one of the most common form that can be taken by all ages of life. The Amla constitutes about 50% of the herbal composition. The number of herbs used here is little more than 40 in number including Bael, Peeper, Gokshura, Guruchi, Harda, Vasa, Elaichi etc. The composition also includes ghee, edible sessame oil, honey and sugar acndy.

    Indication: It is highly meant for treating cough and cold and is taken regularly for rejuvenating the body. Daily intake of this medicine makes the body immune against several common diseases.

  • Dasamularishta: A fermented preparation (Arista) which along with Amla, also includes "Dasamula" (root of ten different plants). The other drugs includes Guruchi, Licorice, Elaichi, Dry ginger etc.

    Indication: Gastric disorder, Skin disorder including pain and inflamation etc. It is sometimes advocated in case of urinary disorder also.

  • Dhatri lauha: A formulation of Amla( also called Dhatri) along with powdered form of iron (lauha). The composition also includes dry ginger, black peeper, long peeper, turmeric etc.

    Indication: Severe jaundice (taken with honey, sugar and ghee).

  • Dhatryarista: A fermented preparation (Arista) of Amla (Dhatri)along with other drugs like long peeper, sugar etc.

    Indication: conditions like jaundice, irregular fever, cough and digestive disorders.

  • Kumaryasava: An alcoholic preparation (Asava) named according to the Aloe vera (Kumari), a part of the formulation. The other composition includes Amla, clove, cinnamom, elaichi, Harda, Bahada, turmeric, coriander, cowhage, dry ginger, pepper, long pepper along with jaggery, honey, and powder of iron,( in purified form) and many more.

    Uses: It increases strength, colour, digestive capacity, weight and taste. Acts as aphrodisiac, relives pain and abdominal disorder, urinary disorder and hemorragic disorder.

  • Panchatika guggulu Ghritam: A Ghee (Ghrita) beased preparation, described in Ayurveda, that is named after it's composition like a group of five bitter herbs (collectively called Panchatikta) and Guggul. Those five bitter drugs includes Neem, Guruchi, Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), Patola (Tricosanthus dioica) and Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum). The composition also includes some more adjuvant drugs like Dry ginger, Harda, Bahada, Amla, Ajowan, Black pepper, Turmeric, Cumin seed.

    Indication: Deep seated skin diseases, digestive disorder, dyspepsia and gout etc. It is also prescribed in cases of diseases of supraclavicular region, heart diesase, cough and asthma.

  • Thriphala Lepam: It is a thick paste like form(lepa), that includes Amla, Harida and Bahada (Collectively called as Triphala), powedr of iron, and Bhringaraj (Eclipta alba). The liquid medium indicated here is the sheep urine. The effect of this is to be in favour of blackening the hair, and the indications are acoordingly.

  • Thriphala Guggulu: A herbal formulation of Amla, Harada and Bahda (collectively called as Triphala), along with Guggul.

    Indication: A variety of skin ulcers those are of mucoid, pus forming, foul smelling, painful type.

  • Thriphala Ghritam: An unique ghee (ghrita) preparation of Amla along with Harda and Bahada (collectively called as Triphala).

    Indication: Eye disorders like night blindness, irritatoion in eye, growth in eye and others. It provides nutrition to eye.

  • Thriphala Churnam: The powder form (churnam) of the Amla, Bahada and Harida (collectively called as Triphala).

    Indication: Polyurea, intermittent fever, digestive disorder and for eye diseases (if taken along with ghee or honey). It is famous for it's use for proper functioning of the gastro intestinal system (It tonifies the system, and also act as a laxative).
